Rain, humidity, and sunshine are the weather elements Tampa and the Sunshine State are famous for. And the residents of Tampa, Florida, and the Bay Area take it all in stride. Yes, the weather is part of what we are so passionate about in our beautiful Tampa, Florida. That is why Flow Pros Plumbing has decided to help out the good people of the Bay Area and give you this guide to the common plumbing problems for Tampa.

This way, whether you are new to the area or have been here all your life, you know just what to expect as standard in the realm of plumbing and all that comes with the many moving parts of your home’s plumbing system.

Those Common Plumbing Problems for Tampa

Pest Problems

Did you know that humidity is the perfect environment for pests of all types? Well, if you have lived in Florida for any amount of time, you may have guessed. Rats, mice, insects, and spiders are all common in Tampa due to the air’s moisture and terrain. Rats and mice will chew on exposed pipes under the home and in the attic. Frogs will clog the toilet. And bugs will use pipes as a highway when there is a hole in the pipe or house. No one wants pest issues in their Tampa and Bay area home.

Tree Root Intrusion

When you have a piece of land with only palms, you may avoid tree root intrusion. Palm tree roots typically grow straight down and don’t spread. However, suppose you have a beautiful majestic oak in the yard or another tree with an extensive root system. In that case, you have the distinct possibility of a root growth intrusion.

Pipe Corrosion

When there is a significant increase in your home’s water bill, it is time to check all the plumbing. You see, Tampa’s water is high in chlorine, and chlorine corrodes pipes fast! And if you have copper pipes, the water’s pH can break down the pipes more quickly than areas with better pH. Having a filtration system installed can help.

Mineral Build-up

There is no doubt, Florida is mineral-rich. But what’s in the earth get into the water systems. That is why you find scale on pipes and fixtures if you do not have a water softener on your home’s water. This scale can build up and leave mineral deposits in your line. Routine drain cleaning can solve this problem.

Consider the Age of Your Tampa Home

As you know, older homes in Tampa can have issues both seen and unseen. And if you have ever watched one of those famous home improvement shows, you have seen it happen. The people buy a home and begin the renovation process. Then, as they try to make minor adjustments and cosmetic replacements, something goes awry. Most often, there is a problem with the foundation of the home, mold or mildew in the wood, or (you guessed it), there is a problem with the plumbing.

Before you buy a home in Tampa, an inspection is in order. Have all of the pipes checked for age and materials used. And if your home is one of the beautiful Tampa historical homes or just an older construction in the bay area, it would be best to count on a re-pipe or pipe replacements. Get a quote, and be sure to add it to the expenses of the home.

All this is not to discourage you from purchasing an older home in Tampa, Florida. In fact, we have some of the most beautiful historic neighborhoods in the state. We simply encourage homeowners to have a good inspection explicitly done for the plumbing system, so you are not caught unaware.

Past Plumbing Problems for Tampa

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection keeps track of all the sewage dumped into the waterways in the Tampa Bay area. When plumbing pipes spill or break, the sewage leaks into the ground and makes its way to the waters. The causes of this leakage can be varying.

One such instance was reported by WTSP Tampa Bay’s 10 in July of 2021. It stated the following devastating overflows in the area.

“The overflow discharged out of three area manholes before entering stormwater inlets which lead to Hillsborough Bay. In the seven hours the wastewater continuously overflowed, the city says a total of 57,820 gallons of it made it into the waterway. Around the same time, heavy rains were causing a separate wastewater overflow just six miles away at 1003 W. Columbus Drive. According to the incident’s report, 2,290 gallons of wastewater overflowed out of one manhole that was near a stormwater inlet leading to the Hillsborough River. It was just shy of eight hours before the spillage could be stopped.”

All that was due to heavy rains with overflowing sewage systems. With nature doing its best, the people of Tampa Bay need to ensure their plumbing is working to its fullest capacity so as to not add to the problem.
